Well, doctor may say it's impossible to improve this health problem. They may tell you to take medication forever. However, too many people permanently improved their hypertension with lifestyle changes and herbs like Ganoderma Lucidum.

High blood pressure or hypertension is defined in an adult as blood pressure greater than 140 mm Hg systolic pressure or greater than 90 mm Hg diastolic pressure.

The silent killer

It can be dangerous. There are usually no warning signs in the early stages. Although you may not feel anything, untreated high blood pressure gradually damages your body organs.

It can also cause heart failure. Here, heart muscles become so weak that your heart cannot pump enough blood for your whole body.

Over the long term, untreated high blood pressure can either burst blood vessels or cause them to gradually narrow and become blocked. In both situations, blood flow stops. Depending on which blood vessels are affected, it can cause

stroke

heart attack

kidney failure

and even blindness.

High blood pressure treatment

In most cases, the mainstay of high blood pressure treatment is medication. This treatment is very important. You must consult your doctor for drug prescription first before taking any herbs for high blood pressure such as Ganoderma Lucidum.

Medications reduce blood pressure quickly and keep it down. However it doesn't cure the disease. If you haven't improved your diet and lifestyle, your blood pressure will shoot up again when medication is discontinued.

Medication side effects

Since high blood pressure medication is for long term, can you withstand those side effects? Some people understand this. So they avoid taking any hypertension pill. This is even more dangerous!

A better alternative is to follow doctor's advice on proper medication first. Once your condition is controlled, you can use herbs for high blood pressure such as Ganoderma Lucidum for long term improvement. Ganoderma detoxification ability helps to neutralize toxics from medication. Therefore, it reduces side effects from drug medication, protects your liver and kidney.

But before this, it's even more important for you to change to a healthier diet and lifestyle.

How to reduce high blood pressure naturally

Keep in mind the following points even you're taking medications and herbs for high blood pressure.

1. Keep your weight within the healthy weight range

2. Take less fat and cholesterol food

3. Eat less salt

4. Drink less alcohol

5. Take more fiber

6. Exercise regularly

7. Don't smoke

8. Manage stress and anger better

Only with healthier diet and lifestyle, you can have better chances to improve your hypertension. And here's how Ganoderma Lucidum herb really help to further improve hypertension.

Ganoderma herb effect on high blood pressure

One of the causes for hypertension is the accumulation of fats and cholesterol in blood vessel wall. In adapting to narrowed blood vessels, the heart pumps harder resulting in higher blood pressure.

The Triterpenes in Ganoderma Lucidum herb effectively clears blood vessel blockage by reducing accumulated fatty substances such as cholesterol and triglycerides.

Ganoderma's Adenosine Monophosphate (AMP) can dissolve thrombus (blood clot) and further helps to remove blood vessel blockage. Ganoderma Lucidum herb makes the blood flows smoother, reducing the stress on your heart. Thus it helps in lowering high blood pressure naturally.

Blood pressure stabilizer

Besides improving hypertension, Ganoderma Lucidum even helps to stabilize blood pressure for long term. It effectively acts as preventive herbs for high blood pressure.

Learn more about Ganoderma herb at http://www.ganoderma-for-health.com or learn how to choose the best Ganoderma extract to improve your hypertension at http://www.ganoderma-for-health.com/ganoderma-extract.html

Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure the DASH Way

High blood pressure is the silent killer and a leading cause of heart disease. The DASH diet is a clinically proven way to maintain healthy blood pressure and reduce your risk of an early death. More of a dietary choice than a weight loss program, the DASH diet (Dietary Approach to Stopping Hypertension) successfully maintains healthy blood pressure and eliminates the need for toxic prescription drugs.

Clinical Studies Support the DASH Diet

The results from several clinical studies clearly support the DASH diet as a safe and effective way to prevent and treat high blood pressure. The economic impact alone from this simple dietary approach is astounding. High blood pressure costs the United States billions of dollars. One health economic study concluded that it could save billions of dollars by preventing high blood pressure.

Grouping the results from population studies investigating the DASH diet, the following can be concluded:

The dietary approach can reduce the systolic pressure (the top number) by 12-14 points.

The dietary approach can reduce the diastolic pressure (the bottom number) by 6-8 points.

The dietary approach could help millions of people maintain healthy blood pressure without drugs.

The DASH diet, supported by the American Medical Association, stands for the Dietary Approach to Stopping Hypertension. By choosing the right foods and supplementing with the right nutrients, you can maintain healthy blood pressure and help prevent heart disease.

Research identified the following nutrients that make up the DASH diet approach:

Increased Calcium

Increased Magnesium

Increased Potassium

Additionally, it keeps salt intake to less than 2.5 grams per day. By simply increasing your daily intake of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, while reducing salt intake, you can maintain healthy blood pressure.

Visit the DASH Diet web page to learn more about maintaining healthy blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure - 12 Dietary and Lifestyle Changes You Can Make to Help Lower Yours

High blood pressure is frequently referred to as the silent killer. Many times, individuals fail to realize they have this condition, until it's too late. But, understand there are lifestyle and dietary changes you can make, to keep you heart-healthy. Here are 12 things you can do to help ensure a healthy cardiac system, and a long life.

1. Stop Smoking

First, stop that pack a day habit. Cigarettes contain nicotine, which causes constriction of your blood vessels, which, subsequently, produces a hypertensive response. By quitting smoking, you can significantly reduce your risk of having a heart attack.

2. Lose Weight

The heavier you are, the more pressure that is exerted on your arterial walls. That's because more blood is being produced, as the oxygen requirements for your tissues, are increased. Discuss with your physician what you can do to reduce your weight.

3. Include Vital Minerals in Your Diet

Although sodium may be contraindicated for hypertension, two other minerals, magnesium and potassium, are not. A recent study in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, found that individuals eating a diet full of mineral-rich, fruits and vegetables, were able to reduce overall blood pressure.

4. Listen to Classical Music

Listening to 30 minutes of classical music daily, combined with slow abdominal breathing, can reduce blood pressure. Also, transcendental meditation may help lower BP levels, as much as taking a second medication, according to a University of Kentucky study.

5. Exercise Regularly

By exercising regularly, you accomplish two things: you lose weight, while lowering your blood pressure. In fact, according to a recent Korean study, walking could be one of the best ways to lower blood pressure, with reductions ranging from 2 to 5 points.

6. Enjoy a Glass of Wine

A recent study from Harvard University, found that drinking a glass of wine each day, can help lower blood pressure in women. It is important to remember, however, to drink in moderation, as too much alcohol, can contribute to other health problems.

7. Cut Back on Salt

Not everyone is affected by sodium, but it can increase blood pressure in some individuals. Try to limit your daily salt intake to 2400 mg or less. Check the labels on food products; don't add salt to your foods. While some foods are obviously high in sodium, other foods, such as breads and cheeses, may have high levels also.

8. Eat Some Chocolate

For all you chocolate lovers out there, here's some good news. Eating approximately 1 1/2 ounces of dark chocolate each day can reduce blood pressure levels, approximately three points, according to a recent Yale study. Apparently, the antioxidants in dark chocolate are thought to be the key constituents responsible for lowering BP.

9. Take Coenzyme Q10

There is some evidence that taking Coenzyme Q10, can help reduce blood pressure. In one 12-week trial of individuals with systolic hypertension, participants were able to reduce systolic levels by 17 mm Hg., in the group taking Coenzyme Q10.

10. Take Garlic

Eating Garlic can have a significant impact on your blood pressure. In seven clinical trials involving hypertensive individuals, when they were given garlic, a significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic levels was seen.

11. Take Fish Oil Capsules

Taking fish oil capsules may also help lower your blood pressure levels, according to research. One of the components of fish oil, docohexaenoic acid, is thought to be the primary ingredient that lowers blood pressure.

12. Add Hawthorn To Your Diet

Hawthorn is a herb that is often recommended for hypertension. In one English study, 79 individuals with type 2 diabetes, were given either 1200 mg. of Hawthorn extract daily, or placebo. At the studies and, those taking the Hawthorn extract, reported a reduction in their diastolic blood pressures, around 2.6 mm Hg. Unfortunately, there is no magic pill that guarantees you won't have a heart attack. However, by following these 12 steps, you will certainly reduce the likelihood that this will happen.

Kearney Adams is a writer and Webmaster for a website that focuses on home remedies. Hypertension, as it is also know as, is a serious health condition that can affect the overall health of an individual. Experiencing hypertension for long periods of time can lead to heart disease, strokes, aneurysms, and even death.

Blood pressure is the measure, in millimeters of mercury (mm hg), of how much the force of blood has on both the heart and arteries when pumping throughout the cardiovascular system. The normal blood pressure reading for a healthy individual is 120/80, as mentioned before, these numbers represent the measure of the force of blood on the arterial walls of the heart and the measure of the pressure in the arteries in between heart pumps, respectively.

Those who suffer from high blood pressure suffer from a blood pressure reading of 140/90 or higher. There are a number of contributing factors to high blood pressure, some of which can be controlled and some that cannot. Factors that cause high blood pressure that can be controlled are: weight, alcohol consumption, lifestyle, and diet.

A person who is overweight is likely to suffer from hypertension. High blood pressure due to obesity can be reversed when a person begins to lose weight. Maintaining a healthy body weight for the size frame and age, will take away extra stress on the heart and return the blood pressure back to a healthy range.

Alcoholism is also another contributing factor to hypertension. Sleep deprivation and reaction time are not the only effects of drinking alcohol. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol increases a person's blood pressure, and constant abuse of alcoholic beverages can also lead to the problems that are associated with hypertension.

The lifestyle that a person leads is also often reflected in their blood pressure reading. Those who lead a sedentary lifestyle do not exercise the heart to make it stronger, thereby resulting in a high blood pressure reading. Starting an exercise routine will make the heart stronger and lower a person's blood pressure.

Finally, what a person eats is also predictive of what the blood pressure reading will be. Those who eat a diet high in cholesterol, fat, and sodium are more likely to suffer from hypertension. Eliminating the previously mentioned dietary factors from the diet as well as adding fruits and vegetables, is the best way to lose weight as well as lowering blood pressure.

Keywords: Hypertension, high blood pressure, best way to lose weight, sleep deprivation and reaction time, lose weight

Susan Patterson has been studying alternative medicine and health for over 10 years. HBP medications are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs. How ever if you want to try to control it with out using medication, there are natural ways to do it. To know more about natural ways for controlling your pressure you should consult your doctor.

Lowering your HBP is more important than having a beer. It's simple and with just a few changes in your lifestyle and diet. It is one of the best things you can do for you body. The best thing that can really work for lowering hypertension is drinking a lot of plain water while avoiding consuming soft drinks, particularly those that are processed drinks and those that contain sugar. Another important step in lowering your pressure is to make sure your getting all the essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals required for a healthy cardiovascular system.

When it's all said and done, the only thing that is stopping you from lowering your pressure is you.

LA is an established free lance writer who enjoys writing articles to give consumers enough information to make informed decisions.

For more information and products on this and a variety of other topics visit LA's site Live Your Best Life at http://www.bestlife-la.com

For more information on self help and motivation visit LA's site Man in the mirror at http://www.mitm-la.blogspot.com

Maintaining a Healthy Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension damages the coronary artery lining and eventually coronary blockages form. As blood pressure goes up, the blood strikes the side of the arterial wall with greater force. This causes some injury to the lining of the artery and the wall starts to thicken. Then the blood flow is restricted and the heart has to work harder.

Blood pressure is measured as systolic over diastolic. Systolic measures the heart at work, or the pumping of blood as the heart contracts. Diastolic measures the pumping of blood while the heart is resting.

A normal measurement is less than 130 systolic and less than 85 diastolic. The ideal is less than 120/80. When your measurement is 140/90 or higher you have high blood pressure or hypertension. Even slight hypertension puts one at risk for a heart attack.

Fortunately, hypertension can be prevented. Finnish researchers found that magnesium and potassium are very powerful blood pressure regulators. A diet, which is high in these two minerals, is very effective in controlling blood pressure. Bananas, milk, yogurt, wheat germ, and strawberries are good sources of these minerals. These minerals are available in supplements but you should check with your doctor before taking the supplements.

A diet high in fruits and veggies is also helpful. Nutritionists recommend eight daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Another recommended food is salsa and a half-cup of salsa is equal to a full serving of vegetables.

Most overweight people tend to have high blood pressure. If you are overweight you can lower you blood pressure three points by losing just ten pounds. Research shows that people who eat a breakfast that is low in fat but high in nutrients can do this. And even if you are not overweight, the low fat high nutrient breakfast will still help keep your blood pressure at optimal levels.

Another important factor in lowering blood pressure is relaxation. Epinephrine and cortisol are two stress hormones that raise blood pressure. Engaging in an activity that relaxes you decreases the levels of these hormones. A sure fire way to do this is to introduce some humor into your life. Read a funny book; watch a comedy sitcom or attend a comedy show. Whatever causes you to laugh will also relax you.

Moderate exercise is also effective in preventing hypertension. You don't have to work up a sweat at your local gym. Engaging in any aerobic activity that you enjoy is just as effective. The easiest one is walking if that is something you enjoy doing. However, when involved in any aerobic activity, you need to perform it for at least thirty minutes to derive the maximum benefit.

Also, remember when doing aerobic exercises you should always be "in oxygen." This means you should not be short of breath at any time you are actively engaged. For example, if you are walking, you should follow a pace at which you can carry on a conversation and not be out of breath. If you don't have a partner to converse with, try singing.

There are many hypertension medications available and if you have severe hypertension, your doctor will certainly prescribe these. However, many of these drugs have side effects, some of which are just beginning to be discovered. It is very much to your advantage if you can maintain your blood pressure at healthy levels through lifestyle changes and avoid the use of prescription drugs.

Holly Spring Dentistry

Triangle Dentistry

Proven Alternative to Cure Hypertension

It is estimated that no less than 600 million people worldwide are affected by hypertension. Described as a 'silent killer' hypertension causes 5 million premature deaths each year (World Health Organisation) and the numbers are rising.

There are two kinds of hypertension: primary hypertension, which cannot be attributed to any one thing, and secondary hypertension, which is attributable to some other illness in the body. Both are equally threatening, and wield the same damage on the body such as: cardiovascular disease (angina, stroke, heart attack or atrial fibrillation).

Commonly treatment is two fold: lifestyle and medication. Lifestyle changes include: stopping smoking, reducing alcohol intake, eating more healthily, getting more exercise, and more rest. Medications include ACE inhibitors to make the walls of the blood vessels relax and widen, Calcium channel blockers to widen the blood vessels, Diuretics to trigger hormonal changes and Beta Blockers to reduce the work of the heart during physically stressful times. Unfortunately the effectiveness of these treatments whether administered separately or together varies, ranging from good to poor. And of course, there is a double-edged sword when medication is used: its positive effects being offset by its negative.

But hypertension can be treated in another way, a way that has been clinically proven to achieve consistently good results, often eliminating the disease altogether while effecting other positive side effects that promote increased health and greater well being. It is the practice of meditation.

In the past 30 years there has been extensive research on the effects of meditation on health, and there is no longer any doubt about the positive effect it has not only on the spirit, but on the mind, and the body also. Meditation changes a persons brainwave frequencies and by doing so, changes the bioelectrical activity of their brain and the commands that it sends to the rest of their body.

When meditating, a person may have more endorphins released into their system causing them to feel 'high', they might also have an increase in the neurotransmitters (dopamine and serotonin) that are associated with positive mental states, their brain might also give the signal to release more melatonin, and DHEA (anti ageing and rejuvenating hormones) into the blood stream and all of these are extremely beneficial to physical and mental well being.

When one feels mentally well it cannot help but have a positive effect on ones physical well being. Likewise, ones physical well being will have a positive effect on ones mental well being. Through practiced meditation, the mind body connection becomes positively symbiotic. There is consistent positive feedback between the two that, in time, will result in a person not only reducing their blood pressure, but improving their overall physical and mental well being.

For more information on meditation, how to meditate for better health, and easy ways to achieve a meditative state please visit: http://www.positivemindstates.com/AboutMeditation.htm

Complications of Hypertension

The symptoms of hypertension include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, ringing in the ears and frequent nosebleeds. But not all people experience these.

In fact, the majority of hypertensive persons have no obvious symptoms. One may have high blood pressure for years without noticing anything or feeling different. Because of this, the problem is usually ignored.

Doing so, however, is your ticket to an early grave. For hypertension can extensively damage the body. Over the years, the excessive force of blood on the artery walls can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure and other serious complications.

"High blood pressure ranks as the main cause of stroke because it weakens arteries in the brain, paving the way for a rupture or blood clot. It also contributes to coronary atherosclerosis (the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries that nourish the heart) which increases the risk of a heart attack. It damages tiny vessels in the kidney that are needed for filtering the blood, which can lead to kidney failure. High blood pressure can also cause blindness by damaging vessels that provide blood to the eye's retina," according to Larry Katzenstein, senior editor of American Health magazine.

"The fact that high blood pressure is a 'silent killer' and a major cause of death and disability was not always appreciated. Medical books published in the early 1900s didn't even list hypertension in the index. And as recently as 1950, there were doctors who believed that as long as you were feeling fine, high blood pressure didn't mean a thing. The magnitude of the problem and its impact on health is now more realistically understood," added Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hospital - Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center in "The Best Treatment."

What can you do about hypertension? For mild cases (in which blood pressure measures 140/90 or 140/104), lifestyle changes may be all that's necessary. This is preferable than taking drugs and is the approach used by most doctors.

"In most instances, mild hypertension can be controlled once you remove the factors that, contribute to it. Since many of these factors are controllable, modifying these through lifestyle changes will often result in an improve¬ment of a person's condition," said Dr. Desiree M. Narvaez, a medical specialist formerly with the Department of Health Non-Communicable Disease Control Service in Manila.

"Two factors account for the shift away from drugs in treating mild hypertension: uncertainty over whether their benefits outweigh their unpleasant and possibly harmful side effects, which can range from fatigue and headaches to elevated cholesterol levels; and recent evidence that nondrug approaches can often lower blood pressure to normal levels," Katzenstein added. (Next: Drugless ways to fight hypertension.)

Since obesity is a factor in hypertension, it pays to lose weight. But how does this occur? This is caused when the blood flowing through the blood vessels create a pressure on heart. While speaking about B.P. we come across 2 words. Systolic Pressure and Diastolic Pressure. B.P. is the measurement of these two pressures. If these values are higher or lower when compared to the normal values we say that he or she is suffering from high or low B.P. respectively.

Well, what are these systolic and diastolic pressures?

The force exerted by the heart on the blood vessels is called Systolic Pressure whereas the lowest pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of blood vessels when heart is relaxed is called Diastolic Pressure. The normal value of blood pressure in humans is 120/80 (120 is the systolic pressure, 80 is the diastolic pressure). When these pressures are higher than the normal then we say that he or she is suffering from high B.P and if these values are lower than the normal values then we say that he or she is suffering from low B.P.

Should one be worried if he or she is suffering with B.P.?

First of all let me make it clear to you that Blood Pressure is not a chronic disease. At the same time it is not the one that should be left uncared about. Because in today's world scenario out of every 10 people 9 are suffering from High Blood Pressure. We may not face any kind of problem until we have a control on B.P. but if we lose control, it becomes our most dangerous enemy.

What are the reasons or causes for B.P. to occur?

Well, there are several reasons for this. But the most important reasons are anxiety, depression, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, irregular exercises and improper diet. In some persons this is due to inheritance. In addition to the above reasons persons who are suffering from kidney related diseases and endocrine diseases may suffer from High Blood Pressure. Excessive usage of drugs are also the reasons for B.P. Especially in women usage of contraceptive (Birth control) pills is a reason for B.P.

How to control blood pressure?

Natural remedies for blood pressure

Firstly, do not treat Blood Pressure as a disease.

In addition to the medication recommended by your doctor following certain regulations in our diet and regular exercises makes us to have a control on Blood Pressure.

1.See that food you eat contains less sodium chloride (salt) and sodium content. Instead eat fresh vegetables and fruits.
2.Drink a mixture of 2 spoons of onion juice and 2 spoons of honey, twice a day.
3.Try to stop alcohol consumption and smoking to the maximum possible extent.
4.Regular exercises like walking, jogging, swimming, cycling will help you to control Blood Pressure.
5..Eating rich Fibre, low Fat, high protein food such as vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, leafy vegetables, fruits and pulses etc., will make us to have a control on it.

What happens if we neglect this?

Many of us may not evince the symptoms of B.P. and neglect it. It is advised to you that consult a doctor if you feel like if you react to even a minute issue. Because we may have to suffer from many disorders when try to neglect it. The main problem is caused when the blood vessels carrying blood to kidneys contract and cause kidney failure. At times it may lead to Heart Attacks which in turn may cause death.

The person who is seriously thinking of how to control blood pressure i recommend you to go through this Blood Pressure Reduction Guide

Cure Hypertension - Cure High Blood Pressure Naturally With These 5 Secrets

Did you know that you can cure hypertension naturally and not contribute to the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies which market high blood pressure medication? More so, many Americans are dying as a result. The cardiovascular disease is extremely difficult to detect; which means many people live with it everyday without being aware of its danger.

Every medical practitioner has the important responsibility of detecting and diagnosing hypertension. Upon diagnosis, the physician will prescribe medications to control the progression of the disease, yet it is possible to learn how to overcome high blood pressure without medication.

There are various elements that cause high blood pressure. The suggested number one cause of hypertension is obesity. Being overweight puts more pressure on your heart and arteries; also minimizing blood flow. Other factors that contribute to elevated blood pressure include stress, high sodium intake and lack of physical activity.

Regardless of your lifestyle, once you are diagnosed, you were subsequently prescribed medication. According to recent studies and general advances, there was a significant reduction in blood pressure patients without the aid of medication. Patients were affected by the consistent side effects of the medications; therefore they began to adjust to certain lifestyle modifications to control the blood pressure levels.

It is evident that controlling hypertension reduces the incidence of other complications such as stroke, heart failure or kidney disease. As drugs appear to be the obvious solution, identifying and treating the actual risk factors is effective. The subconscious mind is the controller for automatic responses that can aggravate high blood pressure. Physical problems like obesity can have great impact on how the body controls blood flow.

Blood Pressure Basics

We all need blood pressure. It is the driving force that keeps the body functioning properly through circulation. The circulatory system moves blood to the vital organs, providing nutrients and oxygen to the cells. This ensures that the cells work well and that the body is healthy.

The process in the circulatory system involves moving blood from the heart through arteries. The arteries take the blood into progressively smaller vessels, arterioles and capillaries. Nutrients and oxygen are delivered to organs through capillaries. Veins take the blood back to the heart and the cycle begins again.

Cause of Hypertension

Hypertension-or high blood pressure-begins when the vessels that carry the blood contract. The pressure increases, making it difficult for the heart to pump the blood and the vessels may suffer significant damage. The circulatory system is unable to feed the organs causing health problems.

Here is where the possible cause of high blood pressure is complicated. Roughly 95% of cases have unknown causes. Many people have the condition without knowing it. It is impossible to control hypertension if you are not aware that you have it.

Yearly Physical

In order to ensure that you find possible problems with hypertension, it is important to see your physician. There may be a significant health problem causing the increased pressure in the vessels including a defect in the kidneys. These conditions are in roughly five percent of high blood pressure cases but it is important to rule this out at you yearly physical exam.

Using Hypnosis to Control Hypertension

You may already know that blood pressure can increase when you are under significant stress and anxiety. This can be controlled by using your subconscious mind to create a new way for your body to process these feelings. Self-hypnosis provides the relaxation and focus you need to control hypertension.

High blood pressure is an automatic response in the body but this doesn't mean that it is not controllable. Your subconscious mind has great influence over your emotions and your physical responses to emotional components in your life. The body reacts to emotions on a physical level including increased heart rate and more pressure in the vessels that carry blood.

The body can make blood pressure increase as a response to various emotional responses to situations. Hypnosis can help you change the way you deal with these emotions. If you can make your blood pressure go up, you can make it go down, too. You can control hypertension through self-hypnosis.

J. Medically defined as a cardiovascular condition, if untreated, it leads to more sever complications and potential death. What Americans should know it that managing hypertension is not difficult and you can claim your life back.

Americans live with high blood pressure for many years before detection. Mostly detected and diagnosed during regular physical checkups, physicians begin providing treatment immediately. The physicians generally prescribe medications to help reduce the blood pressure levels.

More so, a panel of health and wellness experts will suggest additional ways to reduce the blood pressure measurements and control the progression of the disease. Hypertension is often referred to as the "silent killer" that induces heart failure, kidney failure or stroke if not treated properly. It is important that you realize that medication is not the only recipe for controlling hypertension.

Simply adopting healthier life choices and habits will help you successfully beat this disease. All Americans need to commit to getting blood pressure levels checked regularly along with incorporating healthy lifestyle modifications into their daily routine.

Although medications are prescribed and are generally effective, the side effects can be quite annoying. Believe it or not, lifestyle changes will also reduce the presence of side effects. Start making these changes immediately and it is guaranteed that you and your physician will notice the difference in your next reading.

1. Losing Weight

Obesity is a major contributor to elevated blood pressure. Hypertension is very common in men (ages 20 to 44) and individuals over 45 who are obese. Obese people must loose weight in order to notice a reduction in blood pressure. Experts suggest incorporating a healthy eating plan in your daily lifestyle. The most recommended eating plan is or diet is the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). This diet encourages the consumption of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low- fat dairy products.

2. Nutritional Value

Lowering sodium intake is vital to lowering blood pressure. Moderating the total daily intake of salt reduces the systolic blood pressure measurements by a significant number. Moderating alcohol intake and minimizing refined sugar consumption will also lower blood pressure. Increase the intake of potassium, calcium and magnesium by eating plenty of plant foods and omega-3 oils.

3. Physical Activity

Incorporate exercise in your daily routine. Designate 30 to 45 minutes a day for a daily walk; that's all it takes. Use a pedometer to estimate 10,000 steps which will help you loose weight and reduce the systolic number of the blood pressure levels.

4. Stress Management

Stress is extremely significant and it is a direct contributor to high blood pressure. Consider Anger Management courses if you experience chronic anger issues. Use 10 to 20 min of the day to relax or meditate. Listen to soft music, read, and/or walk or do whatever interests you to relieve yourself of stress.

5. Become Self Sufficient

Monitor the improvements and successes yourself. Purchase a reliable digital blood- pressure cuff; use it to monitor your blood pressure regularly and start managing hypertension at home.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading and avid researcher of various high blood pressure treatments. Doctors say this popular misconception has no scientific basis. Once blood pressure normalizes with the help of lifestyle changes and drugs, you can live without the latter afterwards. This is true provided lifestyle changes are continued even without drug therapy.

In others, drug therapy may have to be continued after a year or more. Even then, the fact that these patients didn't use drugs for that period of time spells immense savings and freedom from side effects for a while.

But don't stop using your prescribed drugs without your doctor's knowledge. He or she is in a much better position to evaluate your condition and properly advice you if it's time to quit. The important thing to remember is that taking drugs for hypertension doesn't have to be forever.

"Although most antihypertensive drugs are usually continued for a lifetime, I often stop them after a year to see if the patient can do without them. Not infrequently they can. And even after drugs have been prescribed, don't give up trying to lose weight because the thinner you are, the fewer pills you'll need. Side effects from any drug, no matter how slight, are dose-related. The less you take of any medication, the better you'll feel. It's also a good idea to join an exercise program (if you've been cleared by your doctor to do so). Although exercise alone won't lower your blood pressure significantly - neither will relaxation techniques at least not in my experience - all these steps when taken together, make medication work more effectively and in smaller doses," according to Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hospital - Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center in "The Best Treatment."

Since their introduction in the 1950s, the sale of antihypertensives has been picking up. Americans spend billions yearly on these drugs and there are more than 200 different medications to choose from. All belong to four major classes: diuretics, beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

The choice of drug depends on several factors: the patient's age, sex, health, race and physical condition. Side effects should also be considered. If the patient is uncomfortable with one drug, the doctor may either substitute it with a similar drug or change the medication entirely.

In treating hypertension, the physician may prescribe one drug or a combination of drugs depending on how well the patient responds to them. Make sure you tell your doctor what other ailments you have and the other medications you're taking to avoid unfavorable drug interactions.

"Before starting any blood pressure medication, always ask your doctor about possible side effects - impotence, diarrhea, constipation, frequent urination, fatigue, rash, dizziness, worsening of asthma, a slow pulse and so on. But don't let this litany scare you off. It's all potential, not inevitable, and very much a matter of individual response. One person will tolerate a drug in large amounts, while another reacts badly to a tiny dose. Also, if you're being treated by more than one doctor because you have several different conditions, make sure each of them knows what medications the others are prescribing. Drug interaction during the treatment of hypertension can be dangerous," Rosenfeld said. (Next: Diuretics for hypertension.)

Since obesity is a factor in hypertension, it pays to lose weight. The humble tomato has been proven, in recent Israeli studies to help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of cancer later in life, and helps to keep your heart healthy and working as it should. It is not completely understood as to why this has only just recently been discovered, as scientists have tested thousands of different types of fruit and vegetables to determine their potential health benefits.

The best news of all is the tomato is so easy to get a hold of. You can buy them almost anywhere, and even some of the big brands of tomato sauce contain enough real tomatoes to be just as beneficial, although not in massive quantities as they also contain rather a lot of sugar. Fresh tomatoes are a very effective anti-oxidant and also help to reduce the risk of most forms of heart disease. Shocking that the Italians, who are well known for having a very low rate of heart disease cases reported, have been eating so many tomatoes for such a long time, and nobody has picked up on it.

The study on the health benefits of tomatoes was led by Dr. Esther Paran, who is the leading lady at the hypertension division of Soroka Medical Center. It was mostly a case study performed on patients suffering from hyper-tension, where other medicines had completely failed. Dr. Paran gave patients a dose of concentrated tomato essence, along with adding tomatoes into their diets, at least more than usual. The results were astonishing. Dr. Paran saw results fast, sometimes in as little as four or five weeks. This aqueous fruit definitely looks to be an almost miracle treatment, although it is not a cure.

The effectiveness of the tomato in lowering blood pressure etc. is attributed to the natural presence of the chemical Lycopene. This is a very powerful anti-oxidant that has recently been extracted from 'hybrid' tomatoes that were grown in Israel, called the Lycomato, which were specifically grown to ensure higher concentrations of Lycopene, inside each and every piece of tomato. Lycopene is not the only anti-oxidant that is naturally present in tomatoes. The long list make tomatoes a 'super-food' in reference to lots of different potential heart conditions. Whilst tomatoes may not necessarily lower cholesterol, if you eat them regularly, they can help to prevent LDL cholesterol from sticking to the inside walls of the

Even during the peak growing season it can be difficult to consume four whole tomatoes each day, which is the recommended amount for having a positive impact on blood pressure. Here are some ways to get the benefits of tomatoes without having to eat them straight off the vine.

1. Make Chili. Using tomato puree, which is a concentrated form of tomatoes, as the base for your chili utilizes the antioxidants without the bulk of a whole tomato. Add some ultra-lean and high protein ground bison and kidney beans with minced garlic and onions, and cayenne pepper and you have a heart-healthy main course and a full day's allowance of tomato.

2. Take a leaf out of the Italian's book and eat pasta in a tomato sauce. Use olive oil to fry the onions and garlic, use tomato puree or paste to color the sauce, and use fresh and/or canned tomatoes to flavor and fill the sauce. Using this many tomato ingredients ensures that you will consume far more than the necessary amount of tomatoes and nearly ten times as many nutrients.

3. With any food you can have a side salad, as it does not add many calories. If you have one tomato, whole, sliced, it does not really matter how you eat, just that you do.

4. Drinking your own homemade tomato juice is one of the best ways to cram as many tomatoes as you can into a juicer, making sure that you have a huge dose of the beneficial anti-oxidants.

5. You can buy 200mg tomato supplement tablets. These are good for anybody that does not like the taste of tomatoes but still wants to use them as a medicine. When you take these tablets you are actually taking in more nutrients than you would if you ate the full recommended four tomatoes.

Eating more tomatoes reduces systolic blood pressure by up to 10 points and diastolic blood pressure by up to 4 points. It has definitely become apparent that tomatoes are very, very beneficial for you and your well being, no matter how they are prepared.

Samuel Baron is a huge fan of a Natural Therapy, weight loss and dieting expert and the author of the special report "Natural Treatment For Hypertension" for those who suffer from high blood pressure and are aware of the dangers of conventional medical treatment and want to give a try to natural ways to take control of HBP.

Natural Vasolidators for High Blood Pressure (HBP), Hypertension

Now what a vasolidator does is increase the flow of blood to the tissue or even within the vein. The blood flow is increased to the various organs as well. Vasolidators are used as the treatment for many problems and ailments. In low blood pressure or in many other cardiovascular conditions a vasolidator is used. Sometimes it is prescribed along with some other medicine.

Even in erectile dysfunction a vasolidator is prescribed in order to increase the blood flow to the penis and thus stimulate the muscles so that the muscles stay hard and the erection is successful.

There are many artificial vasolidators. But like most other medications used artificial vasolidators are drugs and so they might have adverse effects on a person. Especially if it is taken along with other medicines with which it can interact, the side effects can get very serious and can also become quite life-threatening. That is the reason why people nowadays are looking for natural and herbal remedies.

There are indeed a lot of natural vasolidators that also work miracles in our body. Eggs, carrots, tomatoes, milk - these are considered as food that will help increase he blood flow in the body. Consuming these items regularly would mean that the blood pressure of the person will stay well in control and therefore will help prevent a heart failure or stoke.

What a vasolidator does is widen the various blood vessels and thus help accelerate the blood to the many organs. Many herbal teas are considered to be healthy for those suffering from high blood pressure and these herbal liquids consist of ingredients that are actually natural and herbal vasolidators.

The rosella flower for instance, is one such remedy which is used as herbal tea. The Rosella liquid has been very popular for many years now as a natural vasolidator. After it was experimented on mice it was seen that the liquid decreases the blood pressure of the animal to a considerable degree. The rosella petals work as anti-hypertension and it helps to fix the aorta ring vasolidator response.

The entire family of the hibiscus plant is used as a cure and effective remedy for hypertension and these natural remedies are used on patients suffering of hypertension with immense success. The extracts from these plants are used as natural vasolidators. What the liquids do is increase the width of the blood vessels and therefore the pressure that is created inside the vessel is automatically lessened and blood flows at a much lower pressure. This is of course the best thing for the heart. Even people who do not have high blood pressure or a cardiovascular condition should take these natural and herbal liquids, tea and even the fruits so that the heart stays active and pressure free. This will increase the activity of the heart and reduce its pressures.

This is the reason why these herbal vasolidators are used as treatment for patients with high blood pressure and also because they are safe to use with no adverse effects. These products being natural also never interact with other drugs that the patient might be taking for the same reasons or for some other problem and this ensures that he will get no serious side effects owing to serious drug reactions. It is better not to use the over-the-counter drugs that claim to be natural vasolidators but rather it is a better idea to use the herbs and fruits as the natural medicines for these diseases and problems. If not anything else these drinks are healthy in the first place.

Those are only a few strategies of many to help you lower and even successfully take control of your high blood pressure.

More simple yet powerful strategies and step-by-step instructions about what to do and how to do it right, you can find in a special report by Samuel Baron "Natural Treatment For Hypertension".

Samuel Baron is a great fan of natural therapy, weight loss and dieting expert and the author of the special report "Natural Treatment For Hypertension" for those who suffer from high blood pressure and are aware of the dangers of conventional medical treatment and want to give a try to natural ways to take control of HBP.

Pulmonary Hypertension - What is Pulmonary Hypertension and What You Can Do About It?

Pulmonary hypertension is a progressive disorder concerning the main artery to the lungs, and causes continuous high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. In other words it is the narrowing of arteries as blood vessels that carry oxygen from the right ventricle in the heart to the small arteries in the lungs. Symptoms of pulmonary hypertension include fainting, shortness of breath, and chest pains. There are no know cures as yet, but many different types of medicine have been made available to ease the suffering and help improve the muscle walls of the arteries.

There are other factors that may increase a persons chance to develop Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH), these include the use of amphetamines or cocaine, HIV infections, liver diseases, and lupus. Researchers have also found that certain gene defects may cause Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). No precursor is required to develop this condition. Men and women, young children as well as some seniors of all ethnicities, can contract this disease. However, PAH usually occurs in women during their 30's and men in their 40's.

Many people who have PAH may not even look sick and as long as they do not over exert themselves, most will not even know they have the disease. Once someone finds out that they have pulmonary hypertension they can live with it, however regular doctor visits should be maintained. You can do exercises to reduce stress and help you relax. Walking is good for you if you are in the early stages of PAH. As the disease advances, PAH sufferers may end up in wheel chairs or even become bedridden. Those in advanced stages of PAH may have to use small oxygen bottles when the go outside the home.

Symptoms of PAH are fatigue, dizziness, racing pulse, chest pains, and swelling of the legs and/or ankles. Some will have a blue tint to their lips or skin which will typically show up in the lips first. One might even have fainting spells. Shortness of breath is one of the most common symptoms.

Although a cure has yet to be discovered, there are many medications that may help pulmonary hypertension. These are mainly Anticoagulants, which help reduce the blood clots in the pulmonary artery. Epoprostenol is considered the most effective medicine for widening the lung arteries, and can now be taken in the form of a nebulizer. Treprostinil relaxes the blood vessel and increases the oxygen supply to the lungs. Bosentan also reduces blood pressure and can now be taken in a pill form.

Pulmonary Hypertension may not be diagnosed right away because the initial symptoms are so incredibly similar to other heart and lung diseases; which first have to be tested and ruled out. These tests could be from echocardiogram, cardiac catheterization, electrocardiogram, and pulmonary function tests. Once the results have been achieved it is very important to seek pulmonologist and/or cardiologist specialists in pulmonary vascular medicine. These specialists will assist you in treating the symptoms of pulmonary hypertension as it progresses.

Jan Oliver is an academic, writer and researcher in natural health. Newborns, infants and teenagers could also suffer from hypertension. It is estimated that nearly 5% of kids may have high blood pressure and the chances of a newborn having high blood pressure is unfortunately on the rise.

Newborn babies usually have high blood pressure when they are born pre-term or they have congenital problems with the heart or the kidneys. It has been noticed however that when kids have high blood pressure usually there is a family history of such conditions and/or coupled with a poor lifestyle including bad diets, obesity and inadequate physical activity.

High blood pressure in infants are however, caused by premature birth or they have problems with other organs like the kidneys, lungs, heart or even their vascular system. Premature babies are often born with a condition called broncho-pulmonary dysplasia, which is essentially immaturity of the lungs.

These babies many also have problems like coarctation of the aorta, which means that the major blood vessel which carries blood to the heart is narrowed. High blood pressure in infants could also be due to a blood clot in a kidney blood vessel.

Other causes include side effect of some medications, exposure to hallucinogenic drugs like cocaine while in the womb, some types of tumors, genetic problems or issues related to the thyroid gland functioning. Newborn babies are supposed to have blood pressure as 64/41 and it rises as the baby grows. So an average baby between one-month to 2 years would have the blood pressure reading as 95/58. Slight variations from these figures should not be a matter of concern but more than this medical help should be sought immediately.

Though high blood pressure symptoms are mostly absent from infants but there could be symptoms of the condition that is responsible for the high blood pressure or HBP. These include bluish or pale skin, zero weight gain or growth, frequent urinary tract infections, rapid breathing etc.

Other common symptoms when the infant has very high blood pressure could be easy irritability, vomiting, troublesome breathing and even seizures. To be sure that the infant has indeed HBP, the only way is to measure the blood pressure, which for infants is done using an automatic device.

For instance, if the HBP is due to coarctation of the aorta, the pulses in the legs could be reduced. Other tests to diagnose high blood pressure in infants include angiography, lab tests of blood and urine, X rays of chest and abdomen, ECG and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Treatment for high blood pressure in infants largely depends on the cause behind the condition and may include: drug therapy, dialysis or surgical intervention like transplantation or coarctation repairing. The recovery rate for the infant would again depend on the cause.

For instance, whether the baby is born with other health problems or there has been any damage done resulting from high blood pressure etc. Possible complications could include failure of the heart or kidneys, seizures or any other organ damage.

As a parent you ought to be alert when to seek medical help and these would be when you notice your baby is not gaining weight or has bluish skin, suffers from urinary tract infections often and seems irritable all the time.

Unfortunately there is no way that high blood pressure in infants can be prevented. However there are some steps one can take to reduce the risk of such conditions. For instance, take the advice of a doctor before becoming pregnant, if you have a family history of congenital heart disease, hypertension or kidney disease. Also if you are on medication, taking them during pregnancy may also harm the baby and cause such situations to develop. Thus it is best to consult the doctor before you decide to become a mother.

Incidentally, a study done in the Netherlands involving 450 babies was done, and reported in the August 1, 2007 issue of Insider medicine confirms that babies born to smokers have a high chance of developing high blood pressure. The study also confirmed that babies born to smokers were considerably smaller and shorter compared to those born to non-smokers.

More information about Hypertension, simple yet powerful strategies and step-by-step instructions about what to do and how to do it right to lower your High Blood Pressure, you can find in the special report by Samuel Baron "Natural Treatment For Hypertension."

Diet Plan For High Blood Pressure Patients

A healthy blood pressure level is 120/80, and is hypertensive (that is high blood pressure) above 140/90 and prehypertensive between 120/80 and 140/90. High blood pressure results in the clogging and hardening of arteries, it affects your eyes and kidneys and increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Obese people are at higher risk of getting a higher blood pressure. In order to keep your blood pressure in control, follow some basic diet instructions:

A healthy diet plan includes fruits and vegetables. Take anything that has low fat content and cholesterol. Add some protein and calcium and potassium in your diet.

Your food selection must have high fiber content. Studies have shown that increasing fiber in your diet significantly reduces your blood pressure.

Minimize your salt intake to 2400 mg per day. Salt and sodium rich foods increase the amount of blood in circulation hence putting pressure on your blood vessels. Eat fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, dairy products and grains. These naturally contain little amounts of sodium salt in them. Avoid intake of food from packets or canned food as salt is additionally added in them.

Here are some of the foods with high salt content which you must avoid to optimize your blood pressure. Either completely avoid them or take low sodium foods.

In sauces avoid soya sauce, barbeque sauce and steak sauce. Onion, garlic and seasoned salts too should be avoided. Lower your intake of baking powder and baking soda.

Curb eating ribs and curd or smoked meats like bacon sausages and hot dogs.

Shun eating cereals, snacks like corn chips, peanuts and pretzels, instant noodles and frozen foods.

Avoid dairy products like spreads, butter and cheese. Avoid all the products which contain high fat content like salt pork.

Use low sodium content foods. If you are cooking your meal then avoid adding salt and cook with herbs and spices. If you do add salt then use ginger, lemon juice or chilies for flavor. Choose low sodium varieties of cereals and eat fresh meat. Rinse before using your canned tuna, salmon, mackerel or sardines. Use skimmed buttermilk if you're cooking with milk or fat.

Keep checking your food labels. Use foods labeled salt free or low sodium. Avoid foods labled high sodium content or ingredients like sodium benzoate, sodium sulfate, sodium hydroxide or sodium nitrate.

Finding the perfect Workout Routines takes time and effort. How do they differ from one another? What is the best one for you? The following guide will hopefully give you a better understanding of these drugs and make things easier for you.

Diuretics are the earliest drugs for hypertension that have been around since 1957. Many doctors prescribe them first and over 15 million Americans use them. They lower blood pressure by increasing the rate at which sodium and water are eliminated from the body.

The main advantage of diuretics is their low price. Patients don't' have to spend much while using them. The bad news is that they have a lot of side effects.

"One man in three who take diuretics becomes impotent. These agents often raise blood sugar (which, however, returns to normal when you stop the drug). They elevate uric acid levels in the blood, and a high uric acid causes gout so that if you're vulnerable, you may wake up one morning with a big red, swollen, painful toe. They can upset an empty stomach (so always have your diuretic with food or milk). And then there's the matter of voiding. Diuretics are usually taken once a day, either with breakfast or at bedtime. A morning dose will keep you 'running' all day; taken at bedtime you're likely to get up every hour or so during the night to empty your bladder," said Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hospital - Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center in "The Best Treatment."

But that's not all. While increasing the elimination of salt and water from the body, diuretics may rob you of valuable minerals like potassium and magnesium. This can leave you weak and confused.

Low potassium levels, a condition called hypokalemia, have been linked to arrhythmias or irregular heart beats. Researchers believe this was the cause of death of some male hypertensive patients in Australia who received diuretics without potassium supplementation.

On the basis of this and other findings, Dr. Hamid Ikram, head of the Department of Cardiology at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Christchurch, New Zealand said that "diuretic therapy may shorten lifespan."

There are other ways in which diuretics can make life miserable for you. While they can effectively lower blood pressure, they do not decrease the incidence of heart attacks. This is probably because diuretics have the nasty ability of raising the blood's cholesterol level, making the patient susceptible to heart disease.

"Statistically speaking, when, blood pressure has been lowered by a diuretic, the incidence of heart attacks is not decreased. We used to think that as long as your blood pressure stayed down, no matter what medication was used, the risk of heart attack was reduced. That appears to be true for almost every antihypertensive drug except the diuretics. In other words, when blood pressure has been normalized by using diuretics, the incidence of stroke is decreased, but not the incidence of heart attacks," Rosenfeld warned.

"For all these reasons, I prefer not to prescribe diuretics as first-line drugs in white hypertensive patients. However, despite their drawbacks as antihypertensives, they do have an important place in the treatment of heart failure, whenever the body retains fluids and in certain 'sodium-sensitive' forms of high blood pressure, especially common in blacks," he added, (Next: Beta-blockers for hypertension.)

Since obesity is a factor in hypertension, it pays to lose weight. Can't say I blame you, with what we've learned about some very popular pharmaceuticals over the last year or so. Well, you're in luck. There are some simple modifications you can incorporate into your lifestyle that can make a big difference when it comes to hypertension, and here are the top 9:

1. Eliminate salt from your diet. This is probably the most important change you can make. The main reason why you will hear people say "I tried cutting back on salt and it didn't do anything for my high blood pressure" is because they forgot about prepared convenience foods. If you start reading labels, you'll find that just about all these items (not just salty foods like chips and crackers) have added sodium. Really, if you want to cut way back on salt, the best way is just to eliminate anything that comes in a box or bag from your diet. Eat natural foods, which will help your health in many ways in addition to lowering your blood pressure.

2. Cut out white sugar. While scientists aren't yet sure exactly why, many studies have shown that eating processed sugars elevates blood pressure. Also eliminate high fructose corn syrup, an ubiquitous sweetener that has even more detrimental effects on health than white sugar. If you need a sweet taste, try adding some stevia, an herbal sweetener that comes in powder and liquid form, or xylitol, a low-carb sugar alcohol, to your foods.

3. Get regular aerobic exercise. Anything that gets you moving and your heart rate comfortably elevated has a beneficial effect on hypertension. Your physician may be able to give you an exercise plan that suits your condition and current fitness levels. It's important not to do too much too soon. There are some Eastern forms of exercise, such as yoga and Tai Chi, that seem to have good effects on blood pressure. The emphasis on full, rhythmic breathing integral to these disciplines may be as important as the actual physical movement.

4. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet. This has been shown to have many benefits other than its effects on blood pressure. You can add fiber supplements to your diet, or eat more foods such as whole grains and vegetables, which brings me to the next tip....

5. Eat those veggies. There are myriad other benefits besides the increase in fiber associated with an increased intake of vegetables. These provide important vitamins and minerals, and other more recently discovered substances such as phytonutrients and antioxidants, which all help to keep your body functioning at an optimal level. One valuable nutrient contained in vegetables is potassium, and so our next tip is to....

6. Eat lots of bananas. Everyone knows that bananas are high in potassium, and it turns out that increasing the amount of potassium in our diet is almost as important as reducing one's salt intake with respect to normalizing blood pressure. As a matter of fact, some authorities think it's actually less about the amount of salt and more about increasing the ratio of potassium to sodium. We've mentioned bananas because they're the most popular fruit in the USA and are widely available, but if you want some high potassium alternatives, try dried apricots, figs, avocados, cantaloupe, raisins, carrot juice, prune juice, peanuts, and almonds.

7. Get that folic acid. This nutrient's been found to have a number of health benefits for women, and protecting against high blood pressure now seems to be another one. Harvard Medical School did a study which indicated that women could lower their risk of hypertension anywhere from 18% to 46%, depending on their age, by taking 1 mg (milligram) of folic acid per day.

8. Eat chocolate, but not too much. Some recent studies have indicated that 100 grams per day of dark chocolate can have blood pressure lowering effects. The researchers postulate that a component of dark chocolate known as flavinols is responsible. But remember, only 100 grams (around three or four ounces), and it needs to be dark chocolate. You'll need to read labels, because most chocolate candy these days uses light chocolate. And of course, chocolate always contains sugar. So if you can't stop at 100 grams, or you need to lose weight (100 grams of chocolate is usually around 500 calories) you'd probably be better off not to take that first bite.

9. And finally, dump those diet pills. You know they're no good for you. While losing weight is usually beneficial for blood pressure levels, doing it by speeding up your heart rate is not. Do it by eating the healthy foods mentioned above and you'll have lower blood pressure and a nutritious diet you can continue with for life.

Of course, if you're already taking any medications, do NOT stop them without consulting with your doctor first. He should be willing to work with you as you try natural options. If not, you may need a new doctor. Give these tips a try one at a time. Keep the ones that help, and when you're done, you'll have a healthier lifestyle for sure!

Joe Serpico is not a doctor, nor does he play one on TV, but he's been interested in health and fitness for over twenty-five years.
